Tobacco Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in our society. Three thousand teenagers start smoking each day in the United States and one third of them will die from their tobacco use. Over 90 percent of adult smokers began smoking as teenagers, and at least 3.1 million adolescents are current smokers. Two million Michigan adults and 131, 600 high school students smoke. In Michigan, more than 14, 500 adults – mothers, fathers, sons and daughters – die each year, prematurely, from a tobacco-related disease.
