Radon
Radon is an odorless, tasteless, invisible gas that is a product of naturally-occurring uranium. Nearly one in eight homes in Michigan could have elevated radon levels.
Radon gas is common outdoors but is diluted to very low levels in the open air. In enclosed spaces, such as a basement, radon can cause problems. It can enter homes through cracks in foundations or slabs and through unsealed pipes, sumps, drains, walls and other openings.
The Surgeon General reports that radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, second only to cigarette smoking. It is estimated that radon causes 20,000 deaths annually. People who smoke and are exposed to high levels of radon are especially at risk of acquiring lung cancer.
You can test to find out how much radon is in your home. Testing is easy and inexpensive. For a list of agencies offering test kits please click here.
