The American Lung Association is thrilled to report that we are one step closer to passing a state-wide smoke free bill. On December 5, 2007, the House passed House Bill 4163, which would make all worksites, including bars and restaurants, smokefree. The bill has now moved on to the Senate for consideration. While there are a few exemptions in the current version of HB 4163, we are pleased that the House has taken this important first step and we will continue to fight for protection of all workers from secondhand smoke in the Senate.

The bill has been sent to the Senate Government Operations & Reform Committee, which is chaired by the Senate Majority Leader, Mike Bishop. It is critical that Senator Bishop, as well as all of the other Committee members, continue to hear from you. Give them a call or send them an email to let them know the reasons you support a worksite free from toxic secondhand smoke. The contact information for all of the Government Operations & Reform Committee is listed below.

In addition, you should contact your own state Senator and urge them to bring HB 4163 up for a vote early this year and to vote “Yes” on the bill. To find your state Senator, Click here http://www.senate.michigan.gov/SenatorInfo/find-your-senator.htm

There has been a tremendous amount of media coverage about the bills.  Perhaps you've seen some of it in your own area.  We are currently posting the print coverage at the CSA website -- www.makemiairsmokefree.com .  Be sure to check the website often for updates under the “Press” tab.  The press releases that the CSA has sent to the media are posted there as well.
